Is blood clots hereditary?

ok my mom just had stomach surgery, after she got blood clots in her legs an one in her lungs. now she is trying to tell me im goin to get one seeing i have to have surgery in january before i can go to basic training for the military. so she wants me to go get blood work because she thinks ill die. anyone have any answers they can help me out on
