What to do with my father in laws controlling ways?

I have been married for over 4 years.Since the beginning I noticed my father in laws controlling ways. From trying to control where my wedding would be to even saying he would help my parents pay for it, which disgusts me!! Then he wanted to give us a house, in which he would come up with the plans etc...I did not like this, but it seemed that I was being ungratefull (as my husband put it). It would take some time before the house would be built so we lived in their "family vacatioin house" where my husband paid his father the price that he had bought the house for 2 years ago. I came into the house fully furnished, paintings and decorations galore. I then persude to paint at least my bedroom the way I wanted it and to move certain things, this was then mentioned as intrusive. When his family came to visit they would rearrange the way I did things. We worked and paid the mortgage and bills. We then wanted to begin saving money.
